Hot day on the rez

It's official; summer is finally here. And I can't think of any place where that's more true than here at Wikwemikong. It's a very still day with a mixture of sun and clouds, and it's very, very hot. Last I checked, which was over the noon hour as Dolly and I were headed to Andy's for lunch, it was close to 90 degrees.

The heat definitely contrasts with the weather we experienced in South Dakota until fairly recently. Even a few weeks ago the air felt cool and damp and many of us wondered when summer would begin. We received our answer this past weekend, however, and it looks like summer is here to stay ... for a few months, at least.

It seems as though there aren't any places here at Wiky that have air conditioning, so I've had to find ways to beat the heat in other ways. Actually I have been able to get a little taste of air-conditioned comfort, but only when cruising around in the car with the top up and the A/C on full blast. The best way to beat the heat on a day like this, however, is to take a dip in the cool, clear waters of Lake Huron. Dolly and I did that yesterday evening and we'll do it again this afternoon as soon as Dolly finishes with work. Judging by the clock that time is fewer than two hours away and can't come fast enough as far as I'm concerned.

Roughly nine weeks have passed since I last set foot on Manitoulin Island; it's hard to believe it's been that long since my last visit. But absence makes the heart grow fonder, or so they say. And judging by the rush of happiness I felt when I arrived in Wiky, I wholeheartedly agree with that axiom. It's good to be here among so many friends and family. And it's a good feeling to know that my summer adventures are only beginning.

Being away from people and a place I cherish so much for two months may sound unpleasant, but it really hasn't been that bad. I've certainly kept busy between my last visit and now, and all the activity has caused time to blur. I've kept busy with tying up loose ends regarding the SDSU Festival of Cultures, rehearsed and played a few gigs with a new (to me) band, and have done a lot with autocrossing. Fortunately the majority of the summer lies ahead. But it's hard to believe that already June has almost come and gone. My, how time flies.
